People consume up to 300 more calories a day now than they did 30 years ago.

At least half of those come from sweetened beverages like fruit juice and soda.

Ditch the drinks and get your nutrients from the whole fruits instead of juices.

Cut 150 calories:

Trade your toppings: If you swap the half-cup of guacamole with your Mexican for an equal amount of salsa, you save yourself about 150 calories.

Get the same savings by using salsa in place of your mayo in a lunchtime wrap.

Other tricks of swapping could include gorgonzola for grated parmesan.

Cut 130 calories:

Turn off the TV: The amount of hours you spend in front of the telly can wreck havoc on your waistline.

Researchers from Georgia State University found that people took in up to 130 calories more on days when they ate in front of the TV than days they ditched the remote.

Cut 107 calories:

Bulk up: Eating low-calorie, fibre rich foods before a meal can help to reduce your total calorie intake.

A study in the Journal of Dietetic Association found that people who ate a 100-calorie salad before their meal consumed 12% less.

Make sure your first course is a cup of veggie soup or mixed salad with fat free dressing.
